Moon Dog, Border Collie Picture

I loved the gentle and trusting nature that shone through this border collie's eyes. I had recently unearthed my pastels from over twenty years of neglect, and this seemed the perfect portrait to try them out again.

I didn't really think through my color scheme other than knowing that if I introduced black pastel too early in the painting, the color of the piece would die. So I just had fun. A friend of mine dubbed the painting "Psychedelic Devil Dog" at this point.

Over time, the dog's name changed to "Psychedelic Moon Dog." Once I added some layers of color (including black!) the painting calmed down quite a bit. But the name "Moon Dog" stuck.
